Scout provided pro bono assistance to Khaltsha Cycles in the form of copy-editing for the organsation’s Heroes on Bikes crowd-funding drive. Because of the COVID-19 crisis, it is critical that essential services are rolled out within communities to help battle the pandemic. To achieve this, essential workers need safe, reliable and convenient transportation to not only reach communities, but to get around in those communities.
Which is why Khaltsha Cycles has come together with Avalanche Bicycles, Pedal Power Association and Bicycling Empowerment Network (Bike4All) to raise funds to provide bicycles to essential services providers who are doing extraordinary work to help flatten the curve. Khaltsha Cycles wants to ensure that each essential worker is physically able to attend to those that need help.
The initial focus is to roll out aid within the greater Cape Town area. But the hope is that fundraising efforts will allow expansion to other cities within South Africa.

Usually, the type of bicycle needed by an essential worker would cost R3 500, including spares and accessories. By subsidising the cost, Khaltsha Cycles has been able to bring down the price per unit to R2 500 each. This is thanks to the support of Avalanche Bicycles, Pedal Power Association and Bicycle Empowerment Network, in collaboration with Khaltsha Cycles. Donations of any amount will be appreciated and the funds will be used to provide each essential worker with a bicycle and an on-the-road kit comprised of the following:
– 1 x Avalanche Bicycle
– 1 x Bicycle lock
– 1 x Helmet
– 2 x Tubes
– 1 x Patch kit + tyre levers
– 1 x Saddlebag
– 1 x Hand pump
– 1 x Lights combo
On Saturday 30 May 2020, Khaltsha Cycles handed over the first batch of 10 bicycles to essential workers in Khayelitsha and Langa. The beneficiaries expressed great gratitude and are now on the road, putting the bikes to good use. In early August, thanks to generous backing from the Qhubeka Foundation, another 55 bicycles were donated. A total of 95 bicycles have been donated to the cause thus far. But even more are needed.
With your support, and with the ongoing support of Pedal Power Association and Bicycling Empowerment Network through Bike4All, Khaltsha Cycles hopes to raise the necessary funds to get even more essential workers on the road and assisting where needed.
